Miracle Meghan

The story that started it all.

In February 2018, a healthy 29-year-old runner went to the hospital to have her son. Then her heart stopped. This is the story of an amniotic fluid embolism (AFE), the strangers whose donated blood kept a mother and baby alive, and five years of learning to live again, told with honesty, humor, and zero sugarcoating.

About Meghan

Still here. Still laughing.

Meghan Jolliffe survived an amniotic fluid embolism (AFE), one of the rarest and most dangerous complications of childbirth, while delivering her son Sullivan in February 2018. She slept through the worst of it. Doctors, nurses, family, and blood donors she will never meet did the rest.

Today she's an author and speaker who writes and talks about what came after: recovery, disability, motherhood, and the strange gift of a second chance. Expect real talk, a lot of laughing, and a strong push to roll up your sleeve and donate blood.

Questions people ask

About AFE and Meghan's story

Short answers to what readers, nurses, and blood-drive hosts ask Meghan most.

What is an amniotic fluid embolism?

An amniotic fluid embolism (AFE) is a rare, life-threatening emergency during labor, delivery, or just after birth. Amniotic fluid or fetal material enters the mother's bloodstream and sets off a severe reaction that can stop her heart and breathing and cause massive bleeding. It can't be predicted or prevented, and it happens in roughly 1 in 40,000 deliveries in the U.S. The AFE Foundation supports survivors and families.

How did blood donors save Meghan and Sullivan?

AFE caused severe bleeding, and Meghan needed a massive transfusion to survive. Every unit came from a volunteer donor. The American Red Cross told her story in "Mother and son alive today thanks to donors they will never meet."

Share your side of the story

The ones who were awake.

I'm writing Miracle Meghan, the story of surviving an amniotic fluid embolism, the five years of recovery that followed, and the incredible people who helped Sullivan and me along the way.

The funny thing about almost dying is that I slept through most of it. Everyone else had to live through it.

Doctors, nurses, family members, friends, and even strangers experienced parts of my story that I may never remember. I'd love to hear your version. It doesn't have to be beautifully written. It doesn't have to be inspirational. I just want to hear what you remember.

Thank you for being part of our story.
